RAPE CULTURE

Every day, a new case of rape is highlighted in the media. Rape and murder of a 13-year-old, rape and murder of a 9month infant, rape of a mentally disabled woman, rape of a daughter...
Surrounding all this, I've been seeing a strong force in the social media demanding violent prosecution of the rapist, as severe as a death penalty. But, what we are failing to understand is that Rape, sexual abuse, sexual harassment is rooted deep, beyond our general understanding. It's a result of hundreds of factors, and sadly, we too are responsible for some of it.

I get messages every day, asking me to do something regarding the increasing cases of rape in our country. I then think of my strongest strength, my voice. Rape culture is a complex subject. It starts with the smallest of matters that we never even consider to be important. Remember the guy who eve teased you while you were walking along the streets of Ratna Park. No big deal, right? No! This is what's wrong. The guy saw you as an object, not a living human being with emotions. He is a man for whom women are to be looked at, to be sexualized. You can tease her as you please because.. you are a man!

Remember when you sang along your favourite Honey Singh song where he says he wants to give a "brown girl" an "opportunity to be his possession"! Remember when your opinion was looked upon as a woman being "too opinionated" or "egoist". Or when someone told you that "educated, independent women break families apart". Or when you had to take your husband or boyfriend's "permission" to go out with your girls. All of this is a result of our patriarchal society. That has taught us that men are in authority over women, that expects women to be obedient and submissive.
From sexualized advertising to molestation, from rape jokes to drugging, from unwanted touch (non-sexual) to rape, they all are a part of rape culture. The difference is that one is termed as normalization and the other as assault, they all are a part of the same mentality, the latter part is just the result of the former. We need to realize that these things, they have a big part to play.

The reason why I am talking about rape culture, which might take years to change, instead of a death penalty or "burning the rapist" is because I know that these are the things that make a long-term and a positive difference. I still stand firm on my principles where I believe that violence can never lead to peace. Just like how wars can never be a solution. We need to find the root of the cause instead of just axing the diseased branches.

The above ideas are for the educated group that will be reading my posts. The group that gets furious with news of rape and abuse, that wants to do something to bring about changes. All being said, it's important to realize that we, as women, are not playing the victims. There is a thin line between rape culture and normal human behaviour, we have to be able to differentiate between the two. I have seen men who respect the other sex and I have seen women more sexist than men. This is not an attack on any gender.

We need to build a society that is open about the term "sex", that accepts it as a basic human need. A society that realizes that sexual urges are natural, a society that educates children about having a control over it. Someone once told me "we need to raise stronger children instead of fixing broken men" and it made perfect sense!

Nevertheless, the most important thing right now is strong laws with even stronger actions. A judiciary system that is quick, efficient and accurate. A system where justice is not a burden for the victims. We need to establish that rape is a heinous crime that can't be forgiven. Our body is not for someone else's satisfaction!

  1. A wistful read, but a profound writing. In my opinion , Both Women and Men should raise their Voice against this heinous crime,But for that Moral Education is must in every Society from Rural to Urban.Developing Morality among Individuals would definitely Terminate this Amorality.

  3. Let's not forget that acts like rape are committed by a subset of weak, anti social, uncivilised men. Your statement that patriarchy is at the root of rape culture just shows how pathological and ideologically possessed modern feminist view has become. It is appalling that you have referenced patriarchy as a system that produces RAPISTS or sex offenders.

Not all patriarchal system is tyrannical in nature, they are based on generations and generations of hierarchies based on competence. Individuals within this structure strive to better themselves, raise their family and contribute to the society. Patriarchy is the reason why we have modern marvels, the reason why we communicate and work together as strong individuals in a workplace. It is also represented in the society today as by our fathers, great leaders, war veterans, engineers, doctors.

It is also surprising to read that you say that you feel strongly about rape culture but yet you are against capital punishment, I wonder why? I think that rapists do need to be punished and in circumstances like these, death penalty should definitely be warranted. The assessment for issues such as rape should be at an individual level not on a societal level where we arbitrarily conclude, that this is a result of patriarchy.

  4. Taboo against sex and suppressing ones sexual urges out of fear of the society might be one of the causes of rape but the major one. Rape is not an act of lust. If you go through data and facts, you'll see how power and dominance plays vital role in this heinous crime. Rape is an act of breaking down someone emotionally, psychologically, physically and socially. We all know and have seen the attitude of the society towards the victims. They are not accepted and even blamed for the happening. See this is how rape ruins someone's life and this is the motive of the rapist, to break the victim in such a way, she would lose basic sense of safety and control over of body. And I am really impressed with your article and happy that you are so actively using your voice and your platform to raise awareness.

  5. I am some how not Satisfied with this. You talked about various Cases and punishments inc. Capital ones. I agree in some terms with you, but you do not truly mean what it should be. Bihar, a state of India, Famous for various and frequent cases all over world. But from recent 6 years, none of the cases have been reported there. In that situation, Indian Government neither give them capital punishment. What they did was, they just stopped importing Alcohols, Drugs and other Harmful chemicals. Started motivation with general peoples. As a matter of fact, capital punishment are not a permanent solution for these types of incidents. I do agree some men did with wrong intention. Punishment should be applied. And the way you talked about the Rape as culture, does it mean all boys follow it? I totally disagree with that, even I say women needs security and more empowerment. Its basic need, as they should be capable for it. Because I saw many of the Women are not using their rights properly but they are still willing to get more rights.
This is our society. Sorry if i said something you do not like

  8. Nice Surface Pictorial!
My attention :- "It's a result of hundreds of factors, and sadly, we too are responsible for some of it."
ON YOUR INITIATION LET'S ADDRESS THESE FACTORS AND WAYS TO MITIGATE THEM.
And probably start a campaign or reach out to NGOs. You can make a difference, set a difference criterion regarding this case.
